Berkeley’s 17th Annual Holocaust Remembrance Day

Manges Collection of Jewish Art and Life in Berkeley

The City of Berkeley will host the 17th Annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Program honoring survivors, and remembering those who were murdered, those who resisted, and those who rescued victims of the Holocaust. This year, the community will honor Ralph Samuel, a survivor of the Holocaust, who at the age of 7 was sent alone to England on a Kindertransport to escape the Nazis.


Yom Hashaoh Commemoration: Finding Light Within the Darkness
Wednesday, May 1 – 6:30 pm
Congregation Beth Emek in Pleasanton

Prayer, poetry, and the lighting of memorial candles will bring the community together in remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust. This year, traveling storyteller Joel ben Izzy will join Congregation Beth Emek to recount tales that shed light upon one of the darkest times in our history. Through a blend of traditional Jewish tales and stories, Joel will honor signs of humanity in the Shoah, even as we commemorate our losses.


Community Yom Hashaoh Observance and Film Screening of Who Will Write Our History
Wednesday, May 1 – 7:15-9:30 pm
Congregation Beth El in Berkeley

This commemoration of the Holocaust and resistance includes music, prayer, reflection and words of remembrance. There will also be a screening the movie Who Will Write Our History — the story of a clandestine group of journalists, scholars, and community leaders in the Warsaw Ghetto who defied the Nazis with the ultimate weapon-the truth.
