The Gershberg/Kazak Family of Concord

Kseniya and Ruslan live in Concord with Lawrence (age 6) and Layla (age 1). They are a Russian speaking family. Kseniya’s family fled from the Soviet Union in 1989 and Ruslan’s family immigrated in the 90s from Ukraine.

They moved to Concord from San Francisco after having Layla and were worried about not being able to find a community where they could raise children with Jewish values. Fortunately, they soon found there was nothing to worry about. They were welcomed with open arms into the Chabad of Contra Costa community. The family appreciates all of the events they put on for kids, especially Camp Gan Israel. They are also sending Lawrence to Contra Costa Jewish Day School and feel incredibly welcome there. They love learning Hebrew along with him!

Kseniya also quickly found “My Jewish Baby,” a free group at Temple Isaiah for moms and pre-crawling babies led by Liora Brosbe, the Family Engagement Officer at the Jewish Federation of the East Bay. She was able to form long-lasting friendships with other  moms in the group. They still keep in touch on a daily basis and celebrate holidays and special occasions together.

Kseniya loves connecting with families in her work as well. She is a prenatal and pediatric chiropractor who runs Empowered Mama Chiropractic, helping to guide East Bay parents in raising healthy and happy families.

Lawrence waits for his PJ Library books every month and they read them as a family, instilling long-lasting traditions and memories. “We are happy to have found our home here surrounded by such a wonderful and supportive community,” said Kseniya.
