December 2018 Family of the Month
The Povlak Family of Pleasant Hill
David and Julia Povlak live in Pleasant Hill with their son Henry (2). Before they had Henry, they weren’t involved in Jewish life in the East Bay. When they found out about Federation’s Sprout initiative, they found vibrant Jewish life throughout Walnut Creek and Lafayette. They have organized their own havurah group with friends they met across various organizations. They gather for communal experiences and celebrate simchas together, like hosting Shabbat dinners, having Chanukah parties, and going to synagogue together. They feel a part of a warm, giving community and are hopeful for a Jewish future for their family.
They love the Walnut Creek Chabad (Chabad of Contra Costa). The Chabad Rabbi and Rebbetzin welcomed the Povlaks with open arms and now their family attends Shabbat meals, Jewish Mommy and Me playgroups, Jewish Music and Me events, and holiday parties. They even came to the Povlak family’s new home to help hang mezuzahs and were guests at Henry’s bris. The Povlaks have also attended programming at Temple Isaiah in Lafayette. They enjoy the Tot Shabbat programs twice a month, and for 2 years were regulars at the Friday morning baby playgroup.
As soon as Henry was born, they signed him up for PJ Library. They feel there is incredible value in PJ Library as they would not be seeking out these books organically in a bookstore. Henry loves reading them and learning about Jewish culture and traditions. One of their favorite books is “The Shalom Book.” Shalom ended up being one of the very first words Henry said, and now he can say “Shalom means hello, goodbye, and peace.”
