September 2018 Family of the Month
The Rooney Family of Berkeley
Jenny and Jay Rooney live in Berkeley with their daughter Josie (17 months) and three cats: Dino, Wilford, and Archimedes. They are proud members of Oakland’s Temple Beth Abraham. “We’re lucky to be part of a congregation where children are doted on and fawned over, and in which there are always activities for them,” says Jenny.
A day after Josie was born, she was diagnosed with an ultra-rare heart condition (the same one that Jimmy Kimmel’s son has). Five months and two open-heart surgeries later, Josie was finally in the clear. The Jewish community’s support was critical in helping them through the ordeal. “Rabbi Bloom and our fellow congregants visited us constantly and brought us many meals — as did the wonderful Rabbi David Booth and the congregants at Palo Alto’s Congregation Kol Emeth, who did the same… despite having never met us before,” Jenny explains.
Josie and her parents love reading PJ Library books. “Our favorite book is ‘Take Care,’ and it’s all about tikkun olam,” Jenny says. “And since neither of us was brought up Jewish, we’re learning with Josie, as well.”
