The Sklar Family of Castro Valley

Rachel and Aaron Sklar live in Castro Valley with their kids Elijah (age 10), Levi (age 9), and Asher (age 5). Members of Congregation Shir Ami, they are active in Jewish life. The kids always attended the Tot Talk program, and now Sunday School. Elijah is preparing for his bar mitzvah and attending JCC Maccabi Sports Camp with his brother Levi.

“The East Bay is a great place to raise Jewish kids,” says Rachel. “We’re so fortunate to have options close to home — be they orthodox, renewal, conservative, reform, or secular.”

Elijah and Levi received PJ Library books in their younger years, and Elijah has since enrolled in PJ Our Way. As a result, the Sklars have a huge collection of Jewish books — useful, considering the kids go to schools with few (if any) Jewish kids.

The Sklars also make an effort to celebrate Shabbat on Friday night as often as possible, as tough as it can be with three kids! Their creative solutions include blessing cookies instead of challah — and not always on a Friday.

The important take away, according to Rachel is that “Judaism is flexible and calls for regular discussions about why we do what we do.”
