Supporting the Future of Jewish Education with an Endowment Fund

 In Building, Foundation

“It’s our belief that Jewish day school lays the foundation for each student to have a full and meaningful connection to Jewish life, because it’s what they live every single day.” – Amy Friedkin

How can your giving make a difference for the future of the Jewish community years down the road? Mort and Amy Friedkin are working to do just that. That’s why their family foundation has established a permanent endowment fund for Oakland Hebrew Day School (OHDS).

An endowment fund is a permanent source of funding for a specific community need. You can specify a cause, organization (like OHDS), or even a specific program to support. You can also make your fund available for the community’s ever-changing general needs. An endowment fund can be established through a gift of cash, stock, property, or with a legacy gift in your will, trust, retirement plan, or life insurance policy.

The Friedkins have a personal commitment to ensuring that OHDS thrives. “If the school had been in existence when our children were growing up, or if we had grandchildren that lived in our community, there’s no doubt that they would have attended. But it gives us great pleasure that our great-nephews and nieces are presently OHDS students,” says Amy.

“It’s our belief that Jewish day school lays the foundation for each student to have a full and meaningful connection to Jewish life, because it’s what they live every single day. And Jewish day schools are a great ROI for our community. Studies show that today’s young Jewish leaders, both volunteer and professional, are disproportionately day school alums,” she adds.

By establishing an endowment for OHDS, the Friedkins have invested in Jewish education and experiential learning that imparts Jewish values and deepens connections to Israel.

They add: “It’s our hope that more community members join us in endowing this important institution in our midst.”
