Family of the Month (June 2018)

 In Engaging, Sprout

The Jones Horton Family of Richmond

Jennifer and Barry Jones Horton live in Richmond with their children, Adeline (age 5) and Jayden (age 7). They also own Sanctuary Bistro, a vegan restaurant (and Sprout favorite!) in Berkeley. They are members of Temple Beth Hillel in Richmond, where Jennifer works as the Mazel Tots teacher with children ages 3-5 (and their parents).

The family works to stay involved in the community. The families in Jennifer’s Sunday school class initiated a monthly meeting for Shabbat and hosted Melita from Octopretzel for a Friday night service. They’ve been to Covenant Winery to learn about kosher wines. They have also hosted benefit dinners for local non-profits, like JYCA, which was a wonderful chance to hear youth speaking out to make a difference.

The family loves receiving PJ Library books. The kids enjoy reading them, and Jennifer uses them in her classes to connect Jewish culture and literature to life, particularly where there are themes of social justice involved.

“I am so proud of my kids and their love for their Jewish culture,” says Jennifer. “They make me want to be a better Jew. I love that we go to the 30-minute service before each Sunday school class and my children hear the sounds of singing prayers and learning traditions. It keeps growing every year.”
