Family of the Month (April 2018)
The Daoust Family of Orinda
Liz and Mark Daoust live in Orinda with their three daughters, Lucy (age 8), Annie (age 6), and Phoebe (age 4). An interfaith family, the Daousts felt immediately welcome at Temple Sinai, where their older daughters attended Tot Shabbat, preschool, and now religious school. They continue to enjoy the same experience of feeling welcomed after first visiting Temple Isaiah, where their youngest, Phoebe, currently attends preschool.
“Both temples make an active effort to involve young families,” says Liz. “Because of this outreach, we’ve really found our Jewish homes and have made so many connections with other families with children.”
Indeed, the East Bay has a very active Jewish culture for families with young children, and especially for interfaith families. Some of their current favorites are Purim parades, Chanukah parties, Tu b’Shevat outdoor activities, and weekly Friday Shabbat at the preschools. Sababa Shabbat at Temple Sinai and Tot Shabbat at Temple Isaiah are also favorites for the whole family.
Naturally, PJ Library is a part of all three daughters’ Jewish lives. Liz, being a former teacher and avid reader, loves reading the books to the girls, and has a particular fondness for “A Hat for Mrs. Goldman.” The three daughters also love connecting what they learn at school with the books they get each month.
While Mark wasn’t raised Jewish, he is fully involved in raising the girls in the Jewish faith, and loves taking part in tefillah each weak. Liz, meanwhile, is studying for her bat mitzvah with seven other women. She also sits on the board of Temple Sinai and is working to create a community garden there.
