Yalla — to Masada!

 In Building, Israel and Overseas

Word of the day: Yalla

Translation: Let’s go

We’ve been busy over the last three days, so we used that word a lot!

Food of the day: Last night we camped in Bedouin tents, then woke up at 4 am to hike up Masada and watch the sunrise. While there we ate this delicious dinner while sitting on the floor and using only our hands to eat.

Song of the day: Balkan Beat Box

We heard the band Balkan Beat Box at a Birthright mega event that happens only once a year. All of the Birthright groups in the country attended, meaning over 4000 people were there. We had front row seats for a speech from none other than Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, then showed off our dance moves to the eclectic beats of Israeli band Balkan Beat Box. Check out their music here:

Photo of the day:

One photo can’t capture the wonder of Masada. We managed to climb up in time for a gorgeous sunrise, learned the history of the ancient palace, and then celebrated Bar or Bat Mitzvahs for 11 members of our group.

Sarah Plovnick is a participant on the East Bay Community’s Birthright Israel trip. She is sharing photos of what she’s experiencing, Hebrew words she’s learning, and glimpses of what life is like on a Birthright bus for ten days. Yalla!
